Ceratolasmatinae Shear, 1986
The previously family level Ceratolasmatinae have been restricted to two the closely related genera Acuclavella and Ceratolasma (Schönhofer 2013). These two genera were already considered closely related and share many morphological features (Martens 1969, Shear 1986). Molecular data (Richart & Hedin 2013; Schönhofer et al. 2013) confirms these genera closely related and both sister to Ischyropsalis, excluding other genera from the subfamily definition. Similarities comprise the horned process on the eye mound, lack of bottle-brush hairs, a relatively simple penis and a characteristic composition of sternal elements. They are restricted to the northwestern United States of America, and inhabit permanently humid to wet habitats, often in combination with running water. The distribution of the genera does not overlap; neither seems to have specific microhabitat preferences (Shear 1986, Richart & Hedin 2013).
